Acrylic Experimentation and Discovery

It goes without saying that acrylic paint is innately the most versatile painting medium there is. Today's abstract acrylic artists are embarking on an exciting new era of discovery. Whether your painting is abstract or representational, new techniques, mediums, and unconventional materials are being combined to achieve infinite possibilities! The purpose of this blog is to invite other acrylic artists on a journey of experimentation and discovery. I will post a new technique, method, material, or practice here weekly. This is a place where acrylic artists can learn from others, and post techniques, or practices that work. In addition to my weekly post, I will bring any exceptional posts to the forefront of this blog. My first post is one of my most important practices for economy and creativity. Join me!

"CARDING" NEW TECHNIQUES

There are some excellent videos and books on innovative acrylic painting techniques. Some of the best technique books are available on this page. However, I can never make a technique mine untill I can recall the technique and incorporate it into my work. I find it very difficult to actually use the techniques that I learn about and try. There are so many new techniques,materials, and mediums to experience and consider that it is sometimes overwhelming.।

I finally devised an economical way to experience and catalog new techniques for future reference. I cover sizable pieces of cardboard with thick gesso (thin gesso causes the cardboard to warp). After the gesso dries, I practice different techniques on the cardboard. Next, I cut out 3" by 6" cards from the techniques I am pleased with. I list the materials used and steps taken in order on the back of each card. I also make and file cards for great color palates as well. These cards actually inspire creativity when I refer to them. Some are the basis for an entire painting!
